How Procter and Gamble Moved to Electronic Documents

The Business Problem P&G faced problems managing the vast amounts of paper required for a company that develops drugs and over-the-counter (OTC) medications. Regulatory issues, research and development (R&D), and potential litigation generate even more paper documents and files. As a result, P&G wanted to gain control of its company documents, reduce administrative oversight of its paper documents, reduce costs, accelerate R&D initiatives, and improve tracking and signature compliance. P&G decided to adopt an electronic document management system. When P&G moved to electronic documents, it had to ensure that it could authenticate digital signatures and build signing and storage processes into its daily workflow. Further, P&G’s legal department wanted to ensure that it had a legally enforceable signature on file. The IT Solution P&G turned to IT integrator Cardinal Solutions (www. cardinalsolutions. com) to implement Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions and Adobe LiveCycle PDF Gene rator (www. adobe. com), which would function with P&G’s eLab Notebook program. These software packages would manage, review, approve, and sign the huge volume of R&D information, including files created with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. P&G adopted the pharmaceutical industry’s Signatures and Authentication for Everyone (SAFE) BioPharma Association standard. This standard was established to help companies go paperless and still interact with regulatory authorities on a global scale. P&G’s initiative focused on implementing methods to manage digital signatures and creating a method to confirm the identity of the signer. The company’s IT and legal departments agreed that the standard met the company’s business needs and risk requirements. Instead of recording information from experiments in paper notebooks – along with numbering each page, signing it and having a witness sign it – researchers can now use word processing program s, spreadsheets, presentation software, and similar tools to generate project notes and other necessary documentation. After a researcher has collected all the data, LiveCycle PDG Generator creates a PDF document and prompts the person creating the file to add a digital signature. The system requires the use of a USB token for authentication. At that point, LiveCycle Reader Extensions embeds usage rights within the document. The Result Today, once a digital signature is added to a file, an auditor can immediately view the document and all activity related to the document. The auditor right-clicks on the signature and views the entire audit trail. The signature can also be appended as a last page of the file so that it can be shared externally when necessary, such as in a court of law.The system saves P&G time and money. Researchers no longer have to spend several hours per week archiving paper files from their experiments. In addition, P&G is able to quickly retrieve large volumes of data that may be needed for government regulators or business partners. P&G projects that it will achieve tens of millions of dollars in productivity gains by using the system. The typical employee will save approximately 30 minutes of signing and archiving time per week..

How new words are created in English

Knowing the relationships of sound and meaning of each word, we will be able to understand how new words are created in English. Basically, there are several ways that new words can be created: by inventing a new sound sequence and referring it to a meaning, by altering the meaning of an existing word without altering the pronunciation, or by modify or expanding the sound sequence of an existing word. The first way refers to acronyms, which are words formed from the initial letters of a phrase. For instance, IPA is the abbreviation of International Phonetic Alphabet, whereas others, such as NASA from National Aeronautics and Space Administration, are pronounced like words instead of a succession of letter names. Some acronyms are written lowercase, causing people to forget their origins and becoming entire new independent words. For instance, ‘radar' derives from radio detecting and ranging. Also, parts of words are clipped to become shorter; for example, examination was shortened as ‘exam', ‘phone' from telephone, and ‘flu' from influenza. Last, there are blends which are words made by combining syllables from different words. Examples are ‘motel' from the first syllable of motor plus the second syllable of hotel, ‘infotainment' from the first two syllables of information plus the last two syllables of entertainment. Second, the meaning of a word may be generalized, for example, ‘Kleenex' is originally a brand name for facial tissue. But now it refers to facial tissue in general. ‘Silhouette', now means dark outline being seen against light, was taken from the name of Etienne de Silhouette. Also, we can change the category of words, such as ‘people', which is a noun mostly meaning the plural of person, can also be a verb meaning populate a place. Finally, there is the metaphorical extension of existing words, like to ‘chew' on an idea meaning to ponder on it. Another way is to compound individual words. Two nouns, say, honey and moon, are joined together to form the compound noun, ‘honeymoon'. The adjective mobile is joined with the noun phone to form the compound noun ‘mobile phone'. The preposition under is joined with wear to form the compound noun ‘underwear'. The verb play is joined with the noun ground to form the compound noun ‘playground'. As for all these compounds, the last word of each compound gives the collective meaning. New words are also formed by borrowing form other languages, and the words have been assimilated into English. For example, there are words from French, like brochure, from Japanese, like sushi, from German, like beer, and so on. Moreover, some words are created by onomatopoeia. Humans mimic the sounds of nature and use these sounds as referents for the sources of sound, such as buzz, whiz.

Managing Performance Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Managing Performance - Case Study Example In addition, the deficiency is also important as it contains the relevant information that has been ignored and that gives a wider view of the performance of the employees. However, the performance measures should try to minimize contamination and deficiency in order to obtain validity (Bach, 44). b. The measure that lacks specificity reduce the effectiveness of a performance appraisal, therefore they should be specific in that they are told what they are expected to do and how the outcome they are supposed to deliver through feedback. Being specific helps the leaders and the employees to meet the set goals of the business. There are strategies that should be put in place in order to specify what the employees are expected to do. For this reason, a measure that lacks specify does not help to meet the set goals of the organization. Employer should point out the specific issues that he feels the employees are failing to improve (Bach, 25). c. Quality is one of the components that can be employed in this sports company so that the company can produce sportswear that are of high quality and unique than the other companies. Secondly, timely, this indicates that the goods produced should be readily available at a store for distribution 2a. Behavioral approach and the results approach performance management is important, behavioral approach is a measure of performance where the bad behavior is monitored, and the bad behavior is discouraged through various means while good performance is rewarded. Result-performance where the employee is rewarded for better performance in order to encourage them to work hard and get more rewards such as promotions, additional payment, increased commission among others (Bach, 14). 2b. Result approach is the best since it makes the workers work hard as they will work with minimum supervision, as well as they can sacrifice to work more hours in order to meet the target. However, behavioral approach is not

Analyze rhythm of Let America Be America Again by Langston Hughes Essay

Analyze rhythm of Let America Be America Again by Langston Hughes - Essay Example After the first three stanzas, there is a couplet that is rhyming and after it, the rhyming scheme that is adopted in the first three stanzas changes. The poem contains the rhyming scheme of blues and jazz that is a special feature of Black poetry (Roberts and Jacobs 2007). Similarly, the words, â€Å"I am the† and many others are employed to create a rhythm in the poem. Moreover rhyming words are used in stanzas to create a rhythm with the help of rhyme such as â€Å"be and free†, â€Å"again and plain†, â€Å"love and above†, â€Å"sleek and weak†, â€Å"greed and need† and many more. The length of stanzas and lines vary in order to put stress on some lines. After seeing the poem, the poem also appears a free verse at many points as the rhyming pattern seems somehow absent with a little rhyme absent such as: In the above-mentioned stanza, only â€Å"me† and â€Å"be† are rhyming, remaining all the stanza is deprived of a rhyming scheme. The poem uses a lot of repetitive words such as â€Å"America†, â€Å"millions†, â€Å"Whose†, â€Å"all†, â€Å"And† and many phrases such as â€Å"Let it be† and â€Å"Who are you†. The author is unhappy about his land, America. To him, he is not allowed to get equal right for each and every field of life. Hughes writes the poem, â€Å"Let America Be America Again† from the perspective of a black man such as Whitman has written from his perspective. The tone of the poem is somewhat pessimistic as the author is not happy with the current condition of America and regards it as a changed state. Rhythm is also created because of the reiteration or recurrence of stresses and pauses. Hughes makes use of repeated anaphora. For example, in the first lines by making use of the repeated anaphora of â€Å"Let it be†, Hughes acknowledges the fact that America is not what it should be and informs the reader with his perspective in a

Teach Me a Piece - Essay Example In the later years, artists who were inspired to compose music with influences from Patton referred to him as their founding father. This paper will give a discussion on how the piece â€Å"High water everywhere† was constructed in terms of lyrics, the importance of the piece to me and audience at large and the social situation of the pieces composition. The discussion will also include the appropriate readings of the piece, and conclude with the important issues from the reading. The piece â€Å"High water everywhere†, has been constructed in two parts, the first part of the piece has seven verses, while the second part has six verses. The lyric is a lamentation of the flood calamity that had affected the whole of Mississippi. The lyrics continue on to address the aftermath of the flood, and what people ought to do to save one another from more harm. Patton, talks of how he wants to move to various places around the state, but those places too, had been affected by the flood that hit Mississippi. The melody in the song is smooth, since the piece itself had a theme of consoling the individuals faced by the calamity. The lyrics make the listeners of the piece emotional as it features a real story about peoples suffering. Patton sang solo while playing a guitar (Springer 60). The piece is important to me due to a number of reasons. I respect Patton from the start because he pioneered the development of a new genre of music better known as delta blues. Pattons creativity aided in the development of a novel genre of music, which had never been witnessed before. The piece is also important since it has embedded history in a form of melody. The piece managed to ease the pain experienced by victims of the Mississippi floods. The piece is one of the songs in the 1920s that took to heart a social situation. Most artists, during the 1920s, composed songs whose themes addressed issues of love and the general art of seduction. I am intrigued with Patton because

Research Paper Example Moreover, the article elaborates on the several facets of evolution. This includes the notion that all living species share a common ancestry. Consequently, the theory states that there exists a relation among the entire world’s species. The second facet pertains to the process of natural selection that drives evolution. Evidently, the natural selection process is also known as the survival of the fittest. Thus, the author offers an explanation of survival of the fittest theory or the natural selection process. Evidently, the theory was formulated by Darwin who believed that all species struggled to fight for limited resources. However, Darwin theorized that each individual species possessed a difference in gene superiority that exhibited greater survival chances. "What is Evolution?"  Science – AllAboutScience.org. allaboutscience.org, n.d. Web. 27 Nov. 2012. . The article begins by delving into the definition of evolution. To this end, it defines evolution as a syst ematic process whereby an organism undergoes change into a more complex and enhanced form. Moreover, the article acknowledges that the evolution theory has been used to explain life on earth. In addition, the article elaborates on the various components of evolution. ... In reference to micro evolution, the article stipulates that there are variations that occur within a species. For example, micro evolution is used to explain how wolves, foxes, dogs, coyotes, jackals and dingoes evolved from a parent pair of dogs. Incidentally, the variations occur in a downward manner and are limited by genetic codes. This means that species such as dogs do not develop new limbs such as wings and change to flying. To this end, there is neither loss in genetic information nor any further addition. On the other hand, macro evolution relates to the important or greater changes in the primary functions by organisms. Moreover, macro evolution involves change from a particular kind of animal or plant into another. In addition, it occurs after several genetic mutations as opposed to during the life of a single organism. Thus, macro evolution attempts to offer an explanation of how the millions of different species came into existence. Kim, Seongcheol, Pudur Jagadeeswaran, Vrinda Kulkarni, and Maira Carrillo. Analysis the case - Assignment Example Getting new workers requires the company to advertise for positions, interview candidates and also train successful candidates in the business of the organization. It would be less costly to the organization if a manager talked to the incumbent workers about what deliverables the company expects and how to improve their performance to meet the targets. Shaer explains that reprimanding employees regarding their performance may erode their morale and ego (27). Managers must thus navigate these scenarios in a professional manner. Counselling is one of the ways that managers can â€Å"fix† underperforming workers. However, they have to consider several issues so as to maintain the integrity of the results of the exercise. While counselling workers, managers must assure employees that they are an important part of the organization and that their performance is acceptable. The point means that managers should approach the issue as a mere act of enabling an employee reach the optimal performance to avoid demoralizing workers. Managers must be willing to go extra miles to ensure that employees benefit from counselling (28). They must also offer support and understanding as the employees try to adjust to the changes. The workers need to know the importance of the exercise and an assurance of support in the process. The managers should explain to the employee the nature of the exercise, the areas they need to improve, and the period that they are required to make the changes. The workers need to understand the consequences of not adapting to the new conditions. All these aspects must be outlined with absolute clarity (27). Acceptance with a â€Å"but† is a common response. Employees admit that they may not be performing in one area, but claim to contribute more in other sectors in the organization (Shaer 23). The claims are often unsubstantiated and may not be measurable. Thus, they cannot be used to show the performance of

Research Paper Example The poor usually undergo a lot of stress, which lead to change of eating habits; they eat more while bored and angered. In conclusion, obesity can be reduced among the poor if better living conditions are provided and inflation rates brought down. Introduction Obesity refers to a situation in which a human body accumulates a lot of fats that end up with adverse effects. Obesity is measured using the body mass index (BMI). Therefore, individuals are considered to be overweight when their body mass index is between 25 and 30, but any person whose BMI is above 30 is said to be obese. Normally, obesity is associated with too much consumption of calories accompanied by little amount of exercise. Additionally, several other factors are to contribute to obesity, for example, age, gender, medication, health conditions, and environmental factors, emotional and physical activities. It is evident that when people grow older their metabolic rates reduce; therefore, they should take different kin ds of food. Young people have a lot of energy to break down the calories, which is why obesity cases are rare among them as compared to those in their 40s. In terms of gender, research shows that women are prone to obesity than men (Sutton 2005). This is because men burn up a lot of calories while resting. It has also been established that when women reach menopause, they tend to gain more weight because they experience a decrease in their metabolic rate. Research also indicates that genetic makeup of an individual can contribute to obesity. If a person’s biological mother or father is heavy, there is about 75% probability of the sibling being overweight. This is unavoidable because one is born with those genes. With the changing lifestyles, people tend to eat a lot of junk food leading to them being overweight. Working schedules have interfered with the normal functioning of human bodies because many people seat for longer hours in the office. Emotional issues influence eati ng habits; emotionally disturbed individuals tend to eat a lot hence poorly manage their weight. Anger and boredom also believed to cause too much eating. Ill health can also cause obesity because of hormonal changes, which slowdown metabolism (Sutton 2005). Depression and some mental diseases can also lead to too much consumption of food. While, under medication, some individual can gain weight because of the drugs they are subjected to, for example, antidepressants and steroids. Obesity can be treated through physical exercises, using foods with low fat content and high fiber; a balanced diet is emphasized. Changes in lifestyles and reduction of psychological disturbances, as well as, taking medications can reduce obesity. Several negative effects are associated with obesity for instance high blood pressure, diabetes and disease of the heart. Moreover, cancer has been associated with obesity; uterus, breast and gallbladder cancer in women while prostate cancer in men. Because a lo t of weight exerts stress on the joints, the hips and knees suffer. Many people view that obese individuals are not attractive; therefore, they undergo stress because of rejection and criticism. Recently, it has been found out that the poor get obese too. Therefore, this paper seeks to identify the reasons behind obesity among the poor (Sutton 2005). Body Over the years, poverty is said to a major factor towards obesity. Inflation and high food prices will

The hood and its influence on youth culture Essay

The hood and its influence on youth culture - Essay Example Hollywood movies often reflect the life in South Central Los Angeles and paint a picture in the minds of viewers about such stereotype but the media perhaps makes the bigger impact in such perception because of the reliability of the information given and the actuality of things that are reported. The media often show the poor neighborhood which is prone to violent events due to the obvious inequalities and the abuse of workers resulting to fights. Looking at the history of south Central L.A., proposition 13 can be blamed for what is happening at the ghetto. The proposition â€Å"cut funding for California libraries, universities, children’s programs, parks, playgrounds, and perhaps most importantly, its public schools† (Corwin, 174). This resulted to even worse quality of living conditions among the poor because the funds for maintenance and improvement of facilities were not enough. In relation to this, the low funding of schools have been affected by the building of prisons. It could be said that the priorities of the government have not been well-balanced. It is ironic that more money was spent on prisons when the more important institutions that could have helped the people stay away from the jails should have been given top priority. Instead, the exact opposite happened. Corwin says that, â€Å"From 1984-1995, California built nineteen new prisons but the state has not built a new university campus in almost thirty years† (175). Considering this situation, had there been great efforts to construct schools or improve those which already existed, more children could have been molded in a better environment. In effect, there would be no need to construct more jails if there was a better plan for the people that encourage them and show that there is a hope for a better tomorrow for the poor. Moreover, there is the â€Å"three strikes† law which demands more prisons to be built. The law is said to force more prisoners to stay in jai l for a minimum of twenty five years to life even for petty offenses. The long period of punishment for offenders increases the number of prisoners at a faster rate and thus requires the government to build more prisons. Other factors that affected the situation in the ghetto were the Watts riots which caused most white residents to flee the area. Then there was the fair housing legislation which allowed middle-class Blacks to move to better environments leaving the unemployed, single mothers, elderly and the welfare cases behind. Such groups of hopeless and helpless people were joined by Latinos who fled their country due to worse political situations. The competition for a low paying job among Blacks and Mexicans is high and is making their lives more difficult. With the struggles that they are going through, the people often result to violence to express their cry for their rights however such actions make the situation even worse. Following out Corwin’s logic, the conditi on of schools should first and foremost be made a top priority for the government because this can be an instrument in the making of better citizens. The improvement of such institutions should be well-funded so that quality service will be given to the people. Teachers should be paid well so that they will stay in the ghetto even after years of experience. Volunteer and substitute teachers may be accepted but they should not be the ones largely making up the faculty of the schools. The people, whether Whites, Blacks or Latinos, should be given equal

SEC 10-K Analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

SEC 10-K Analysis - Essay Example The company has successfully extended its business operations all across America (1649 outlets) and Canada (11 outlets). Lowe’s, after considering the statistics provided by different relevant institutions estimated that US home improvement retailing market is worth more than $695 billion including both product demand and installed labor opportunity. However, due to the economic downturn within USA, the market size reduced by 7% in 2008. It is also estimated that the market will show some improvement in upcoming 2009 and demand will rebound in late 2010 or early 2011 once the recession is completely over. Lowe’s faces competition with other plumbing, electrical, hardware and electrical manufacturers plus suppliers and with merchandise stores, warehouses and e-businesses. Taking this into account as well tough economic conditions, Lowe’s paid special attention to adopting innovation centered approach to update its machinery by employing modernized and sophisticated technology, improving the store-outlook, productivity and efficiency within the stores by including information system s and store expansion so that it could cater customers all across USA. It must be pinpointed that better employment opportunities and subsequent increase in real personal income, growing housing sector and property ownership are the major determinants that contribute to higher sales. Unemployment rate of 5.7% and negative growth in property sector did affect the sales but the expansion policy (115 new stores in 2008 117,000-square-foot (117K) and 103,000-square-foot (103K) stores for large markets and a 94,000-square-foot (94K) store to serve smaller markets) of top management saved Lowe’s from the negative consequences because of the contribution from new stores in sales revenue that dropped by 7.2%. This reduction would have easily crossed 10-12% if this expansion policy had not been adopted. Expenses were

Why Did America Become Involved in WWI Essay Example for Free

Why Did America Become Involved in WWI Essay Why did America become involved in WWI? How did President Wilson justify his decision to enter the war in 1917? Was the war in the national interest? At the start of 1917, the United States and its president was not interested in fighting in the war. President Woodrow Wilson wanted to remain neutral. Even though 2 years earlier in 1915, a Germen u-boat destroyed the R. M. S Lusitania, in which 128 Americans were lost. The United States was interested in selling weapons and help with funding the allies in the war. There were several factors that propelled the United States into the war. One of the factors that contributed in the President’s design in entering the war was a message intercepted by the United States government from German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmerman to the Mexican government. This proposed a German-Mexican alliance, if Mexico declared war on the United States. If this happened, it would return Texas and other territories to Mexico. On April 6, 1917, the U. S. joined its alliesBritain, France, and Russia to fight in World War I. World War I was also know as the great war or the war to end all war’s. This Great War cost the United States $33 billion dollars, and 116,708 were killed, along with 204,002 were wounded from the United States. The Great War cost over 37 million lives from both sides. As Woodrow Wilson would describe this war, The Americans who went to Europe to die are a unique breed. (They) crossed the seas to a foreign land to fight for a cause which they did not pretend was peculiarly their own, which they knew was the cause of humanity and mankind. These Americans gave the greatest of all gifts, the gift of life and the gift of spirit.

Voting Rights of Prisoners

Voting Rights of Prisoners How would you feel if you got your rights taken away from you because you did something bad? Its like saying them boys across the street said a bad word in public and now they cant talk no more. This is how felons feel about getting their voting rights taking away from them. Saying bad words isnt all that bad depending on what word or words him or her would say. Getting him or hers first amendment right taken away is completely uncalled for. Now putting him or her in detention or some kind of punishment for saying a bad word is completely understandable. Using foul language isnt that bad depending on what your using it for and how your using it. For instince say a man was cursing at his truck because it wouldnt start and a police officer over heard him and he got his 1st Amendment right taken away just because of that and he got put in jail because of that and he did his jail time and served what he had to serve for what he did and he never got his rights restored back to him. Restoring the rights of individuals who have served their time and re-entered society is the right thing to do (Virginia governor restoring felons). The situation with the man and his truck is very realatabel to the quote because the man served his times and did everything he had to do and he never got his rights back and the right thing to do is to give it back to him since he served his time. Restoring voting rights lessens ex-prisoners stigma and helps them rejoin their communities and reducing the risk of recidivism(Restore voting rights for felons whove done their time. ) Restoring a ex-convicts voting rights helps them rejoin their communties and not feel like a outsider or a criminal no more. Doing him or hers time for for the crime that they did and getting their voting rights taken away from them is not understandable because they did their time that they had to do so they could get their voting rights back. A 20 year old man was racing his car and he got caught by the cops and he got a ticket for racing and he had to do comuntiy service for a month also and he could not drive his car for one month. My American English Lessons :: Education Language Learning Essays

Mezimene's sonorous singing rang clearly above the voices of her classmates. A, B, C, D . . . L-M-N-O-P . . . W, X, Y, and Z. Wednesday night language classes all started the same way; we introduced ourselves and a neighbor: I am Mezimene. He is Francisco. All eighteen students came for the same reasons. Learning American English would allow them to pass the U.S. citizenship exam and interview, to advance at work, or to find better employment. Listening, speaking, and writing were our tasks. The women did very well; they learned to collaborate and worked together filling the gaps in their understanding of the reading or writing assignments. Most of the men struggled to stay awake as we worked into the late evening hours, lagging behind in their lessons-but Francisco managed to excel and always stayed on track. Tired, weary-the students trickled in before 6:10 pm, coming from work or taking care of children. They paid forty dollars for six months of classes, money invested toward achieving their goals and dreams in America. I had never taught adults before, but embarked on the endeavor full of idealistic hope and fervor. My students came to America from Ethiopia, Somalia, Haiti, and Cape Verde. None were younger than forty and some were already in their sixties, but that, for me, was the charm of teaching the class: nurturing the desire to find new opportunities through citizenship or assimilation into the American way of life. I saw the class as an avenue of passage, a beacon, a training ground, where the students could complete the difficult passage from being seen as outsiders to becoming full-fledged Americans, even of a hyphenated variety: Ethiopian-American, Somali-American, Haitian-American, and Cape Verde-American. Finding out the goals and aspirations of my students was as important as marking down progress notes about their reading and writing skills. I was not there to teach language in isolation, or phonics alone; I felt called to teach my class about American English in the real world, in their world. Yet there were those who disagreed with me: the alphabet and kinesthetics practitioners, who touted the importance of writing the alphabet over and over again at each class session and engaged in physical activities that would reinforce classroom learning. The program director was one of these devotees, and I watched as she began instruction one week. The program director was a tall, bony woman with wild, frizzy hair and a smile that seemed more snide than kind.

Women Pioneers :: social issues

Women Pioneers Women living as pioneers in the late 1800’s endured many difficulties. However, after accomplishing long sought after goals and overcoming tremendous obstacles, they achieved great lengths and received many honors. Women had to fight for their education, fair wages in highly respected and mostly male professions, and finally, the right to vote. Females had to work continuously in order to gain respect and achieve a level of equality between themselves and the men surrounding them. When women chose to venture into the working force, they could only attain menial jobs. Nevertheless, some women chose to go one step further. Men working in high-class occupations such as doctors and lawyers did not favour the idea of women working alongside them. Numerous applications for colleges and universities were turned down due to the fact that the applicants were females. Many women were angered by this sexual discrimination and decided to do something about it. Brave women organized lobbyist groups and founded women-only colleges in order to prove that, they too, were worthy of an education. Female perseverance in attending medical school resulted in growing numbers on the medical scene. A few female patients realized that they preferred a female doctor since they perceived that women understood their problems much better than male doctors did. Despite this, it was still frowned upon by men to work alongside a woman. Female lawyers were not seen in the courtrooms until one woman stepped out and dared to challenge the law. Clara Brett Martin became the first female lawyer. Through her years of schooling and hard work, she proved herself to be a worthy candidate. Surprisingly, however, she, among many others was paid less than half of what men received, even though both sexes were doing exactly the same work. This same type of sexism occurred with female teachers as well. Even though, by 1870, at least half of all teachers were women and still, they were paid much lower wages. Female discrimination occurred for over forty years until 1918. The first Women’s University enforced the Minimum Wage Act in order to protect women from low wages, bad working conditions and long hours. In addition to the other occupations women had opened doors to, there was still one final position they had to attain. During the 1890’s-1910’s, women were uninvolved in the world of journalism. Unlike men, they were forced to overcome a sexual barrier that prevented them from writing for the newspaper.

Waste defined as unwanted matter

Chapter – 11.0 IntroductionWaste is defined as unwanted affair or stuff of any type, frequently that which is left after the utile substances or parts have been removed. It can be solid, liquid, semi-solid or contained gaseous stuff ensuing from either human or carnal activities. Based on the above definition, we can state that since the beginning of life on Earth, world has been bring forthing waste runing from castanetss and other parts of animate beings which they slaughter for their nutrient, to the wood they cut to do their carts. However, with the advancement of civilisation and the promotion of engineering, the waste generated has become more complex in nature and even more varied in footings of its components, doing it more complicated to be controlled and managed decently. Furthermore, it is deserving observing that, today, most of the states in the universe have witnessed a crisp population growing which resulted in the rapid enlargement of urban countries, taking to significant rise in the figure of consumers. This phenomenon is in itself mostly responsible for the addition in the sum of waste generated daily. Waste is finally thrown into municipal waste aggregation centres where the direction and disposal is done. Yet, if done improperly, it can do serious impacts on wellness every bit good as jobs to the environment. For case, if non decently disposed of, waste could on the one manus spread infective and chronic diseases, and on the other manus could take to chemical toxic condition and radioactive jeopardies, that could, at times, be lifelessly. Added to that, improperly managed waste can do H2O, Earth and air pollution, which finally affect people ‘s wellness and put on the line their lives. So bearing in head the antecedently mentioned factors, authoritiess all over the universe have to plan proper and efficient methods of waste disposal that better guarantee the safety of its people and cut down the effects of waste jeopardies on persons and the environment wholly.Chapter- 22.0. Definition of solid wasteDue to the momentous addition in waste that characterizes modern-day societies ; solid waste has become easy recognized than defined. However, solid waste has been defined by the New York Department of Environmental preservation as any refuse, garbage or sludge and other cast-off stuffs including solid, liquid, semi-solid or contained gaseous stuffs, ensuing from industrial, commercial and agricultural operations and from community activities. To get down with, specifying solid waste is of great importance to be able to separate and cover with different classs of waste successfully. Nevertheless, a careful and thorough cognition of the beginnings, types every bit good as the belongingss of solid waste is one of the basic demands needed for a proper and equal direction of solid waste.2.1. Beginnings of solid wasteThe beginnings of solid waste vary from residential, to commercial, institutional, building and destruction, municipal, agricultural, industrial and risky beginnings, depending on the constituents and types of waste produced.2.1.1. Residential beginningsThe size of urban residential countries, made up of both individual and multifamily homes, low ; medium ; and high rise flats, have presents expanded in a manner that they now constitute a major cause of the coevals of big measures of solid waste. Besides, the changeless alteration in people ‘s life style, and nutrient wonts led to the rise of consumer societi es which has finally contributed to the coevals of more solid waste.2.1.2. CommercialCommercial countries fundamentally constitute of assorted edifices that offer services and installations to the consumers. The latter include section shops, eating houses, markets, offices edifices, hotels, motels, print stores, service Stationss, car fix stores, etc. The figure of the above mentioned edifices is increasing twenty-four hours by twenty-four hours as the figure of people in demand of these installations has been increasing dramatically. Consequently, the sum of waste produced by these constitutions has besides been lifting. Waste is besides more varied as it includes organic or combustible solid waste ( e.g nutrient, paper, cardboad ) , inorganic or non-combustible solid waste ( e.g glass, Sn tins, aluminium ) and particular waste ( e.g electronics, bulky points, white goods ) .2.1.3. InstitutionalInstitutional beginnings of solid waste are varied in footings of the constitutions invo lved in treating such type of waste and the type of waste produced. These include authorities centres, schools, prisons and infirmaries. Talking about infirmary waste, which constitutes of disposable instruments such as acerate leafs, panpipes, swabs, patchs etc, it is deserving adverting that this type of waste has an highly bad consequence on the environment. Acerate leaf to state, that it is besides extremely infective and can be a serious menace to human wellness. For this ground, it is strongly advised that medical wastes should be handled and processed individually from other waste.2.1.4. Construction and DestructionThe addition in universe population has been accompanied with an increasing demand for residential and non-residential edifices, that is to state single or commercial edifices. For this ground, more immense edifices are being constructed, others are being knocked down or demolished and other 1s are being repaired or remodeled. Besides, there is the municipalities à ¢â‚¬Ëœ route fix and redevelopment work which leaves behind hemorrhoids of waste in the destruction sites. The measure of such waste is hard to gauge and is ever unpredictable.2.1.5. Municipal servicesAnother of import beginning of solid waste is that which consequences from the operation and care of different municipal installations, including street cleansing, landscape gardening, catch basin cleansing, Parkss, beaches and other recreational countries. Because it is by and large impossible to foretell some of the constituents of this waste and its beginnings, it is frequently referred to as waste from non-specific diffuse beginnings, which can be contrasted to the specific waste from the residential beginnings which is recurrent.2.1.6. AgriculturalWaste that is generated in the agricultural field is in no manner less of import than the one which residential, commercial or institutional beginnings generate, although it is different in its type and constituents. The chief beginning of this type of residue is the inauspicious agricultural activities conducted in the field such as planting and harvest home of trees and harvests, animate being maintaining, the production of milk and the operation of feedlots. The disposal of such type of waste has n't been the duty of most of the municipal waste direction bureaus. That is why the disposal of carnal manure has become a critical job for a big figure of states where agribusiness is a common activity.2.1.7. Industrial wasteNo uncertainty, the old ages that followed the industrial revolution have witnessed great technological development which proved to be critical for the states ‘ economic systems. Light and heavy fabrication industries are now being developed, chemical and power workss are being set and fiction of new stuffs has been an ongoing procedure. However, this technological promotion goes manus in manus with the addition in the waste stuffs generated from all sectors including meat processing and rendition, wool scouring, mush and paper devising, fish processing, tining and confectionery sectors†¦ . Consequently, new and efficient ways of waste direction demand to be developed in order to run into the demands of the indus trialised states.2.1.8. Hazardous wasteHazardous waste is any type of waste that constitutes an at hand menace to homo ‘s and animate being ‘s lives. Besides, it is besides considered a major menace to the environment including workss and other life animals. Hazardous waste may incorporate toxic substances that are either caustic, extremely inflammable, or explosive, and respond when exposed to certain things like gases. This sort of waste is generated non merely in the industrial sector or in infirmaries but besides some family waste, like batteries, pigment Sns and old medical specialties can be categorized as risky. Unfortunately, some states do n't hold proper disposal installations for these risky wastes which, at times, can be fatal.2.2. Types of solid wasteSolid waste could be divided into three chief types depending on the beginning of the waste generated. There is first the municipal waste, so the industrial and biomedical waste, and eventually the agricultural waste.2.2.1. MunicipalIt includes wastes generated from residential, commercial, institutional, construction/demolition, and municipal services. These could be nutrient wastes, paper, plastics, glass, aluminium and other stuffs, composition board, consumer electronics, family risky waste, wood, steel, concrete, particular wastes, rubbish and street sweepings, etc. It is deserving observing that the municipality is in charge of the aggregation and disposal of such types of solid wastes.2.2.2. Industrial and biomedicalThese are classified under the same type of waste because they consist of elements that are extremely and potentially unsafe and risky. Though biomedical waste differs from the industrial waste as it originates from biological beginnings, yet both of them should be decently managed to protect the general populace, specifically workers who are on a regular basis exposed to such waste as an occupational jeopardy.2.2.3. AgriculturalSpoiled nutrient wastes, carnal waste, rubbish and other agricultural wastes are types of solid wastes produced in the agricultural field. As I antecedently mentioned, the direction and disposal of such type of solid waste is, in most states, non the municipalities ‘ duty, which poses a serious job for them.2.3. Properties of municipal solid waste2.3.1. Physical belongingssWhen we talk about the physi cal belongingss of municipal solid waste, we should needfully advert the specific weight, wet content, atom size and size distribution, field capacity and the compacted porousness of waste.2.3.1.1. Specific weightIt is defined as ‘the weight of stuff per unit volume ‘ ( Integrated Solid Waste Management, George Tchobanoglous, Hilary Theisen and Samuel A. Vigil, 1993 ) . It is measured in ( lb/ydA? ) and is needed in order to measure the entire mass and volume of waste that must be managed. However, specific weights of solid waste vary unusually with the geographic location, season, and length of clip in storage. ( Table 1.1 )2.3.1.2. Moisture contentMoisture content of solid waste means the per centum of the wet weight of the stuff. It is expressed as follows: M= ( w – vitamin D ) 100 Meter: wet content ( % ) tungsten: initial weight of sample, ( pound ) d- weight of sample after drying at 105A °c, ( pound )2.3.1.3. Particle size and size distributionIt is an of import consideration in the recovery of stuffs ( Figure 1.1 ) . It may be defined by the followers: Scandium: ( fifty + tungsten ) Scandium: size of the constituent cubic decimeter: length in millimeter tungsten: breadth in millimeter H: tallness in millimeter2.2.1.4. Field capacityIt is the entire sum of wet that can be retained in waste, which, finally, determines the formation of leachate in landfills, that is to state H2O in surplus of the field capacity. It varies in conformity with the grade of force per unit area and the province of decomposition of the waste.2.2.1.5. Permeability of compacted wasteIt is used to mention to the hydraulic conduction of compacted or pressed wastes which governs the motion of liquids and gases in a landfill.2.3.2. Chemical belongingssThe chemical composing of the constituents of municipal solid waste helps measure the processing and recovery of waste. For case, the possibility of burning or firing waste depends really much on the chemical composing of waste. There are four chief belongingss that should be focused on if wastes are to be burned: proximate analysis, blending point of ash, ultimate analysis and the energy content of waste.2.3.2.1. Proximate analysisIt consists of finding the wet loss from waste when heated, the extra loss of weight at 950A °c, the fixed C and ash weight of residue after burning.2.3.2.2. Blending point of ashIt is needed to find the temperature at which the ash ensuing from the combustion of waste will organize a solid by merger.2.3.2.3. Ultimate analysisIt involves finding the per centum of C ( C ) , H ( H ) , O ( O ) , N ( N ) , S ( S ) and ash in waste ( Table 1.2 ) . Table 1.2: Typical informations on the ultimate analysis of the combustible constituents in the residential municipal solid waste2.3.2.4. Energy contentIt can be determined utilizing a full graduated table boiler as a calorimeter, a research lab bomb calorimeter and by computation if the elemental composing is known. However, it can be said that the informations on the energy content of the organic constituents of municipal solid waste are based chiefly on the consequences of bomb calorimeter trials due to the trouble of pull stringsing a all-out boiler.2.3.3. Biological belongingssAbout all the organic constituents in municipal solid waste can be converted to gases, which is the most of import biological feature. In add-on to this characteristic, there is the production of olfactory properties and the genteelness of flies.2.3.3.1. Biodegradability of organic waste constituentsVolatile solids content, which is determined by ignition at 550A °c, is frequently used as a step of biode gradability of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste. ( Table 1.3 ) Table 1.3: Datas on the biodegradable fraction of selected organic waste constituents based on lignin content2.3.3.2. Production of olfactory propertiesOlfactory properties develop when solid wastes are stored for a long clip. The latter develop from the decomposition of the readily analyzable organic constituents. This belongings is by and large accompanied by alteration in the colour of the organic waste to black.2.3.3.3. Breeding of fliesIn warm clime fly genteelness should be an of import consideration. They can develop quickly in less than two hebdomads after the eggs are laid. For this ground the storage period of solid waste should be short particularly in hot conditions. Eggsdevelop 8-12 hours First phase of larval period 20 hours Second phase of larval period 24 hours Third phase of larval period 3 yearss Pupal phase 4-5 yearss Entire 9-11 yearss2.4. Definition of solid waste directionSolid waste direction is a system for managing all the refuse generated by people populating in urban and rural countries. It consists of the aggregation, transit, processing, recycling or disposal and monitoring of the waste stuffs produced by the assorted human activities. Waste direction is carried out in order to maintain metropoliss clean and to cut down the effects of waste on people ‘s wellness and the environment. But it is besides meant to retrieve resources from it.2.5. Solid waste rhythmThere are 5 chief stairss in the procedure of waste direction viz. analysis, aggregation, transit, recovery and recycling or disposal. These are summarized in the undermentioned figure 1.2.2.5.1. Solid waste direction rhythmIn order to develop an appropriate waste direction solution that meets the demands and demands of the dwellers of peculiar country, and the demands of worlds that keep altering over clip, it is decidedly req uired to analyze the waste to be managed. For case, the cognition of the volume or sum of waste produced helps make up one's mind on the equipment required for such volume of waste to be disposed, a suited service agenda every bit good as the staff needed for the work. Furthermore, the cognition of waste watercourses that are normally disposed of is needed in order to plan and transport out suited direction process. So it could be said that the direction of solid waste is an ongoing procedure that starts long clip before the waste is produced.2.5.2 CollectionThe 2nd measure in the waste direction rhythm is the aggregation of waste from bins which by and large differ in size and contents, and from disposal countries where wastes vary from family simple refuse to industrial Dumpsters which are filled by more complex wastes generated either by persons or companies. Waste at this degree could be separated or un-separated ( commingled ) .2.5.3. Transportation systemIt follows the aggrega tion measure and consists of both transporting the collected wastes to the resource recovery centre and droping the contents of the aggregation vehicles in the centre where the waste is supposed to be processed.2.5.4. RecoveryOnce unloaded in the processing installation, the waste is sorted into reclaimable and non-recyclable points, besides called general waste, as a readying for the following phase where the waste is really disposed of utilizing the needed method for each class ( reclaimable or non-recyclable stuffs ) .2.5.5. Disposal and monitoring of solid wasteEqually shortly as the waste is sorted and classified into different classs, the reclaimable waste is carried to a recycling installation, where it is processed in order to be reused. Whereas the non-recyclable waste is either sent to a composting or inceneration centre or disposed of at landfill.2.6. Solid waste treatment/management2.6.1. Land make fullingLand filling has ever been a common pattern in most states univers e broad. It involves the monitoring of the incoming waste watercourse and burying it in big holes specifically designed for the intent. At this degree it should be acknowledged that a decently designed and well-managed land fill can be hygienic but besides a comparatively cheap method of disposal of waste stuffs. On the other manus, nevertheless, poorly-designed every bit good as poorly-managed landfills can make a figure of serious environmental effects that is why the procedure of land make fulling starts long clip before the dumping of waste in the landfills and does non stop at the degree of burying the waste. Municipalities and waste direction bureaus have to pay a great trade of attending to the closing of the land fill every bit good as its care after the closing. For case, harmonizing to George Tchobanoglous, Hilary Theisen and Samuel A. Vigil a figure of elements have to be taken into consideration in order to guarantee that bing landfills do non impact people ‘s wellness and the environment negatively. To get down with, they believe that the ballad out and design of the landfill is of import, together with the operations and direction. The reactions happening in landfills, the direction of landfill gases and leachate should be taken into consideration. Harmonizing to them a typical layout of a landfill is presented in the figure1.3 taken from Integrated Solid Waste Management, Engineering Principles and Management Issues, 1993. The volume and type of waste disposed of in a landfill during one operation, which is referred to as cell, varies from one land fill to another. For this ground, we can sort land fills under three chief classs. First, the land fills that are designed for commingled municipal solid waste ( excepting industrial waste ) . The 2nd class of land fills includes waste that is cut into strips or shredded in order to be compacted to a tighter surface, therefore increasing its denseness. The 3rd type includes land fills for single waste components known as monofills. However, whatever waste is buried in land fills, a day-to-day screen consisting of dirt or other stuffs, such as compost, should be used so that it controls the blowing of the waste stuffs outside the land fill, the entry of rats and flies and besides the entry of H2O. These safeguards taken after the disposal of waste in a landfill aid guarantee that the latter does non impact public wellness and the environment.2.6.1.1. Restrictions of land fillingSince the development of this method of waste disposal at that place have been three chief issues related to set down filling. The first issue relates to the uncontrolled release of landfill gases that can make countries off-site, dispersed annoying olfactory properties and do potentially unsafe jobs. The 2nd job is related to the consequence that the uncontrolled discharge of landfill gases could hold on the ambiance. Added to that, is the job of the uncontrolled release of leachate which could make the land or surface H2O and contaminat e it, doing a figure of diseases to the persons. For these assorted grounds, one of the chief concerns of waste direction bureaus should be to extinguish or at least cut down the impacts associated with this waste disposal method in order to maximise its benefits.2.6.2. RecyclingIt is non a modern-day method as it started long clip back when resources were really scarce and people had fewer picks. However, with the industrial revolution recycling has taken a different and more complex form as the stuffs being processed presents differ from those of the yesteryear. This method consists of treating used stuffs into new merchandises in order to forestall the waste of some resources and cut down the negative effects other methods could hold.2.6.2.1. Reclaimable stuffsTo get down with, as I antecedently mentioned, waste stuffs could be divided into two chief classs: reclaimable and non-recyclable waste. The reclaimable waste, which is our chief concern, includes stuffs such as glass, pap er, metal, plastic, fabrics, aluminium, lumber, concrete blocks, batteries, electronics and biodegradable waste.2.6.2.2. Benefits of recyclingTo get down with, recycling has an economic benefit for persons every bit good as the community in general, though there has been some dissension about whether recycling is economically efficient or non. A survey conducted by the Technical University of Denmark found that in 83 % of instances, recycling is the most efficient method of waste disposal, but the sum of money that could be saved through recycling depends on the efficiency of the plan used to make it. It has been proved that recycling could be profitable if it replaces the traditional ways of waste disposal, if the landfill fees are high and of class depending on the sum of waste to be recycled. Furthermore, it is believed that recycling saves energy. For case, the Energy Information Administration states that â€Å"a paper factory uses 40 per centum less energy to do paper from recycled paper than it does to do paper from fresh lumber† . It besides argues that recycling aluminium saves 95 % of the energy required to do the same sum of aluminium from abrasion. Finally, recycling proved to hold enormous benefits on the environment. It reduces air pollution that could be caused by gases produced in incineration sites. Besides, it helps cut down the risky waste ‘s leaching from landfills. It besides controls the ingestion of natural resources which the universe hazards of running out within a figure of old ages. All I all recycling can be considered an efficient manner of prolonging the environment for the approaching coevalss.2.6.3. Restrictions of recyclingCompared to other waste disposal methods, recycling could be extremely good. Yet like other methods it has its defects and restrictions excessively. For illustration, it has been proved that nowadays waste is being recycled for fiscal addition regardless of the risky effects it could hold both on workers ‘ wellness or the environment, taking the recycling industry set up in China as an illustration. Furthermore, the profitableness of recycling is questioned because even develo ped states like the United States of America have trouble in happening markets for recycled points doing of marketing a serious issue for them. Added to that, the cost of reclaimable stuffs can at times exceed the cost of the natural stuffs. In add-on to the old statements, critics argue that in the procedure of recycling, it could take more energy to bring forth recycled merchandises than it does to dispose of them in traditional landfills or incineration sites.2.6.3. Reduce and reuseThe tendency of waste coevals is increasing in most states in the universe due to the crisp rise in the universe population, accompanied by the enlargement of urban countries. However, in order to halt this tendency of increasing sum of waste produced by each individual we should command the coevals of waste in the first topographic point. Waste bar, besides called â€Å"source reduction† , means that mills should plan and industry stuffs that cut down the sum of rubbish created and single people should buy and utilize stuffs that could be reused. Therefore manufactures every bit good as persons contribute to the procedure of cut downing the waste produced, which finally hold and hopefully avoid the costs of recycling, composting lan d filling and burning. Good illustrations of merchandises that could be reduced or reused are containers and packaging, newspapers, vesture and other goods like furniture, tyres, etc.2.6.3.1. Benefits of decrease and reuseReducing waste saves the natural resources and recycling stuffs to fabricate them deceases the coevals of waste dramatically as finally less material will necessitate to be disposed of. Furthermore, forestalling waste means economic nest eggs for communities and persons excessively. For case, if mills industry merchandises with less packaging, they will purchase less natural stuff. This means the lessening in the fabrication costs and the addition in the net income. Individual people could besides derive if they buy merchandises in majority, with less or reclaimable packaging. However, we should bear in head that reclaimable merchandises need to be more lasting, therefore necessitating more material. Besides, screening and fixing points for reuse takes clip and it could besides be money for concerns. Some points could besides be risky as they continue to be used.2.6.4. IncinerationThis means the disposal of waste by burning it or change overing it into heat, gas, steam and ash. It is seen as practical method of disposing of certain risky waste stuffs such as biological medical waste. It is besides deserving adverting that it is a common method in states where land is scarce like Japan.2.6.4.1. Restrictions of incinerationIncineration is a controversial method because of the emanation of gaseous pollutants that accompany the procedure and which may hold serious environmental effects.2.6.5. CompostingIt consists of break uping organic waste, such as nutrient, with micro-organisms in order to bring forth consumer merchandise or compost that varies in footings of its physical and chemical features depending on the nature of the get downing stuff. Harmonizing to George Tchobanoglus, Hilary Theisen and Samuel A. Vigil the composting operations consist of pre-processing of municipal solid waste, decomposition of the organic fraction of the waste and readying and selling of the concluding compost merchandise after it has been cured and stabilized. This procedure is summarized in the undermentioned figure 1.4 taken from their book Integrated Solid Waste Management, Engineering Principles and Management Issues,1993. This method allows the usage of the already available waste in a more productive manner and reduces the volume of wastes placed in landfills. However, there are issues associated with this method that should be analyzed and solved. These include the production of olfactory properties that accompany the procedure and the absence of fixed standards for suited or unvarying compost merchandise.2.7. Solid waste direction in the Sultanate of OmanThe sultanate of Oman has undergone dramatic alterations since the 1970 ‘s. Along with other states in the universe, it has witnessed an addition in the population characterized by the enlargement of the urban countries and the change in the life styles of its people. These alterations automatically affected the size, beginnings, and type of waste generated by single families or authorities establishments and industries. This means that the already available system of waste direction has become deficient to run into the demands of the lifting figure of people. Mahad bin Eissa Shammas, Director of the board of directors of environment personal businesss in the governorate of Dhofar says in a study for a web diary that â€Å"The addition in the population denseness, as a consequence of the uninterrupted urban enlargement, together with the betterment of life criterions, have increased the sum of generated solid waste all over the sultanate. Assorted processs were taken to construct the basic installations for solid waste disposal, but those stairss could non fit the velocity of development the universe has witnessed in this field.† For this ground the authorities has put a batch of accent in the demand to better waste direction methods to run into the both the demands of people and the environmental demands of a underdeveloped state.2.7.1. Solid waste garbage dumpsBurning waste is a common pattern in some locations in the sultanate, but throwing waste in garbage dumps is besides a widely used pattern. Mahad bin Eissa Shammas criticize s the available garbage dumps stating that healthful garbage dumps were introduced in the sultanate yet. Besides, there are no suited mechanisms to roll up and pack the waste in order to forestall internal burning. Furthermore, taking the location of the garbage dumps was non done on a scientific footing. That is why some garbage dumps are located on the same vale where otiose H2O is being drained, which makes the pollution of the land H2O an at hand job. Recycling on the other manus was introduced several old ages back, yet it has been limited to specific stuffs such as metals, fish and agricultural waste. To sum up we can state that the disposal of solid waste in the sultanate was non good managed due to the deficiency of consciousness among people in charge of the waste direction. However, a great trade of attending has late been paid to this job. So Torahs have been modernized and surveies have been conducted by the ministry of local municipalities and environment in cooperation with Muscat municipality in order to better waste direction methods.2.7.2. Recycling procedureDirector Mahad bin Eissa Shammas, says that the authorities intends to switch to mechanical intervention workss to recycle the waste, and to do usage of private sector in recycling. He gives the illustrations of the successful undertakings of gum elastic pulverization and runing Fe produced from used auto tyres which were utile for the environment. Fecal matters of herds are now being collected and used to bring forth natural fertilisers. Fish oil and pulverization are being produced in particular mills and used as fresh fish and fertilisers. The leftovers of slaughter houses particularly the tegument is being used to fabricate leather. A closer survey of the waste direction of Al Amerat Municipality as a theoretical account will be covered in chapter†¦ ..2.8. Waste direction in PalestinePopulating in a state that suffers from war, Palestinian people faced a batch of troubles in pull offing the solid waste produced by mostly populated countries, which otherwise and under ordinary fortunes, constitutes a serious job to a big figure of states in the universe. Based on a study written by Salah EL Borno, Director of the Council for Solid waste direction, it could be said that the bad patterns with the absence of statute law and review mechanisms in many countries resulted in insufficient and inconsistent aggregation services. Waste was on occasion dumped in unfastened countries, farms and vales or in some non-hygienic topographic points, which represented a possible danger to the public wellness and the environment, particularly to the land H2O resources.

Total Project Control: a Manager’s Guide to Integrated Project Planning, Measuring, and Tracking

3/11/04 radical regurgitate mince A Managers convey to Integ gaitd expulsion Planning, Measuring, and Tracking By Stephen A. Devaux, published by John Wiley & Sons, NY, 1999 (A concord re thought by R. Max Wideman) excogitation Stephen Devaux published this view as in 1999. In it, Stephen attempts to establish a common mensural, quantifiable data and analysis, by which the vagabond jakes non exactly be managed, precisely besides compargond to every other vagabond conducted by the organization. In his Preface, Stephen observes 1 The contri neverthelesse of a construction company erecting a d inducetown skyscraper, the pharmacologist all overseeing clinical trials for a juvenile drug, the account motorbus supervising the development of a database for a Fortune 100 client work outly three atomic number 18 engaged in examine focal point. Yet chances atomic number 18 that the things they do be very distinct. . . . But step to the fore side of the run con itself, all these foxs actually r oddityer a great kitty in common. Each has a scroll . . . Each has resources . . . Each has a reckon . . . Each is going to run into unforeseen circumstances . . Most important of all, distributively has a stove of institute to be accomplished. But traditional childbed focusing methodologies ar unable to deal with work range of a function in an acceptable quantifiable manner. As a result, traditional shake off forethought concomitantors out work domain from the oversight process by as subject mattering it to be a prerequisite to the process. The traditional memory access is Once you memorise your work desktop, we piece of ass provide you with a multitude of duodecimal techniques for planning, computer programming, resource budgeting, and tracking your see to it. all(a) of these techniques ar based on a defined and constant work backdrop. However, the work itself is neer quantified in a management that put forward support last making. . . Other than aspect that Scope definition is important, modern project management is silent. As many of us have experienced, for exercising in computer softwargon development, project scope ho map in fact be highly protean. Since the hold back was written, thither has been an exp wiz and unaccompanied(a)ntial increase in these types of projects giving rise to interest in project portfolio management. So, there is cl premature a need for a common metric upon which acceptance or rejection of competing projects can be based. This is true whether the projects are contemplated or on going, and extends to decisivenesss on changes to their respective work scopes. As Stephen observes2 Precisely because work scope varies greatly from project to project, and even over conviction, within a single project, the index to manage that ever-changing work scope is vital To ensure a tolerable level of quality for acceptable constitute. AEW Services, Vancouver, BC 2004 electronic mail emailprotected ca complete go out program line varlet 2 of 7 To select the beaver elements of scope to tailor when forced to do so in order to meet schedule and/or budgetary requirements. To increase scope where the projects return on investment (ROI) can be enhanced by the additional deliverables(s) To determine which of many achievable project work scopes should be beneathtaken as part of the multi-project portfolio. In his book, Stephen introduces a number of metrics with wily names to support his theories. Well describe whatsoever of these in our next section. Book expression chalk up get word Control, referred to throughout as TPC, consists of eleven chapters as follows 1.The Nature of a Project 2. An Overview of TPC Planning 3. An Overview of Planning the prepare 4. Planning the Work Scope 5. matuproportionn the Work Breakdown Structure 6. programming I The Critical Path regularity (CPM) 7. programing II The Precedence diagram method (PDM) 8. Activity-Based Resource Assignments 9. Resource Scheduling and aim 10. Tracking and controlling the Project 11. Conclusion Stephen good loves acronyms. His offset printing new-fangled metric, the DIPP, which he claims is fundamental to TPC3 is first mentioned in chapter 1. However, it is not explained until chapter 2, and even then only after introducing the CLUB, Cost of Leveling with Unresolved Bottlenecks, and AIM FIRE his acronym for the management cycle of Aware, Isolate, Measure, Forecast, Investigate, Review and Execute. So, what does DIPP stand for? We had to inquisition the index to find out and hypothesize what it stands for Devauxs Index of Project Performance DIPP has a formula which is EMV ( judge mo canary observe of the project, as of the current completion date) dissever by ETC (estimated salute to complete the project. Chapter 2 also mentions Stephens VBS ( order breakdown structure)5 provided it is not until chapter 5 that we learn that it is a TPC concept that brings the scope/cost/schedule triangle of value analysis down to the micro-project or application level. 6 Chapter 5 introduces another concept, the ravel (Devauxs Removed Activity Gauge) that is the quantification of the amount of conviction separately activity is adding to the project. It is the opposite of meat float, and corresponding total float, since it only exists on the critical path activities, it is the amount of time an activity can be pint-size before it has a disembowel of zipper and another path becomes critical. A built-in explanation of its use is given in chapter 7. A metric for the resource ginger snap of an activity, called DRED, again is mentioned in chapter 6, scarcely is explained in chapter 7. It turns out it stands for Doubled Resource Estimated period and is an estimate of how long it would take if the rate of resource usage anticipated in estimating its duration were to be AEW Services, Vancouver, BC 2004 telecommunicate emailprotected ca make sense Project Control Page 3 of 7 doubled. thus it is an index of resource elasticity. But by chance the high point is another acronym called rad that appears in chapter 9. Chapter 9 is a banter of the parameters sur fine-tuneing resource scheduling, leveling and availability, just about(prenominal) on and off the critical path, and the count of DRAG. Stephen explains that there are three different causes of DRAG9 1. Delay collect to the logic of the work, i. e. CPM schedule DRAG, 2. Delay cod to other ancestor activities, which unavoidably pressure out the schedule of the successor, and 3. Delay repayable to the specific activity having to wait for resources, which we leave alone call resource availability DRAG or RAD.So there you have the definition of RAD. In practice, RAD itself has numeric constraints and the calculation is complex, requiring computer software. Stephen provides the formula and explanation, still you can skip this section if you wish. The point is, this metric is typically not calculated, so the rattling impact of unavailable or over stretched resources on projects as a whole is unknown to the organization and accordingly not accounted for when it comes to assessing project failures. What we liked This may ound like fun stuff with acronyms, but fuck it all is the serious vent of How can any investment decision be made, on a quantified basis, unless there is at least some sentience of what value awaits a successful conclusion? 10 Indeed, Stephen might have added or even what constitutes a quantified successful ending? Later, Stephen answers his own question by observant in that location are thousands of corporate organizations that count on projects for more(prenominal) than 90 part of their revenues. Yet, other than intuitively, they have no representation of tying the projects they do to their net incomes. 11 rase under traditional project management, an unassailable minimum data for each project in a portfolio should be the judge monetary value, the current completion date, and the cost estimate to complete. 12 Actually, having worked for respectable real e recite development companies, we can state that these concepts are well known to them. However, having also worked with software development organizations, it appears that these metrics are not only rare but tend to be foreign to proponents of the in vogue(p) forms of software development project management. chthonic Stephens TPC approach, the data required is even more pro run aground. In a portfolio of projects, it should consist of13 Project Name Expected financial take to be As of (i. e. Current insurance lotage date) Current Completion Date red ink per week Late (%) Gain per Week Early (%) New Expected Value Cost Estimate to Complete mere(a) DIPP Note the addition of the time value of being ahead or behind schedule, not in terms of project overhead AEW Services, Vancouver, BC 2004 Ema il emailprotected ca contribute Project Control Page 4 of 7 costs but in terms of gain or loss in value of the harvesting to the organization. Stephen provides many examples of his approach, although not all calculations are explicit.Stephen wades into the assembly of work breakdown structures, and CPM scheduling to illustrate his theories. On the question of how do you plan the work scope, he give notices 14 Each type of project is different, and each project is different. It is therefore difficult to act hard-and-fast rules for assembling scope documents. The best idea I have found is to Start with the benefits you want to achieve, Incorporate them into a business plan, Then move as rapidly as affirmable to a concrete image of the thing that result provide those benefits. This is salutary advice The bullets are mine, by the manner. On the enumerate of estimating, Stephen offers more sound advice15 The person who is going to be responsible for the work should be the on e who generates the estimates. This is probably the most important contributor to accurate estimates. The occasions for this are 1. This person go away be a subject matter expert, trained in the discipline unavoidable for the particular work. 2. This person is the only one who go forth know precisely how he or she plans to do the work. 3. He or she go away usually have a vested interest in meeting his own commitment, and establishing the reliability of his or her own estimates.Unfortunately, the practicality in many cases is that, (a) the contributors dont know how to estimate, (b) they dont want to estimate, and (c) if they are really busy, they dont have the time to estimate. Still, it does suggest that estimating ought to be a part of outturn skills. Downside Under Scope/Cost/ history Integration, Stephen observes 16 Work scope is the butt on which the whole project rests. It is the reason for doing the project to obtain the value that will accrue from the work . . . Onc e we make love this, devil things come into clearer focus 1.Quantifying scope is important. It is directly related to profitably. In a project-driven company, if you havent quantified project scope, you cannot accurately estimate, or work to increase, profit 2. The metric used to measure scope is the dollar mark. To be precise, the expected dollar that measures the value that the project is undertaken to generate. But Stephen skates round the field of study of how you arrive at this expected value by stating Now, how one goes closely estimating the value of a project is a topic of its own, beyond the scope of this book. 17 Unfortunately, that means the whole premise of his book rests on an undefined EMV parameter which itself is changing due to external influences. Stephens thesis, and consequent metrics, relies on a tacit as impartption. This is that you have projects where the activities can all be identified, their resource requirements at large(p) up and the time and co st of AEW Services, Vancouver, BC 2004 Email emailprotected ca Total Project Control Page 5 of 7 each reasonably accurately estimated. And further, that those resources are sufficiently flexible that schedule changes can be accommodated. On most projects, this is unreasonable, and for projects in the early part of their life span, this is patently impossible. whatever of the metrics may be open to question. For example, Glen Alleman, VP, Program Management Office at CH2M HILL has commented on the DIPP formula (i. e. EMV assignd by ETC), as follows18 There are some(prenominal) edit outs with the DIPP equation. 1. The denominator creates a divide by zero error as the project reaches the end and the estimate to complete approaches zero. This is poor demeanour of a achievement indicator not a ratio of two values drawn from the alike time sample. . The indicator has nonlinear behavior over its life cycle. 3. The ETC value in the equation needs to be the sum of multiple estimates t o complete, since EMV is the sum of all possible outcomes. The equations ETC is a point value with no index i to correlate with EMVs sum across the indices of possible outcomes. The primary issue here is that DIPP does not include the drop costs of the project. Devaux states these are not indispensable for the assessment of completion decisions. In fact the estimate to complete is based on the foregoing performance. The performance factor for be work is most often derived from the performance of the previous work. Past is a predictor of the future. The drop down costs are accruals and burden the net profit of the project. Ignoring sunk costs is not only poor financial management it is poor project management as well. The sunk costs must be paid by someone. The project manager must submit whom and how much is to be paid in assessing future decisions for the project. Ignoring these is like driving in the rear view mirror. It can be done, but not recommended. We may not agree w hole with Glens assessment, but the point is well taken. some other bone of contention is about moderates. Stephen cites the example of catching a mainsheet under a plan based on median time estimates. much(prenominal) a plan would probably mean that we would unload the plane 50% of the time. Clearly this is unsatisfactory so we must add contingence time. Stephen then says this is sometimes called management allow for and19 There is an important difference in the midst of management reserve and padding. Management reserve is always added either at the end of the project, or immediately before a major milestone. It belongs to the project manager and the entire project. We agree with the intent but not the definitions. In our view, Contingency should provide for variances in durations and belongs to the project manager. Management Reserve, as the name implies, should belong to management for possible changes in scope (like picking up a coffee and donut at the airport), and Pad ding is a political issue and should be a no, no. Still, where workers are required to work on several projects concurrently, may be it is necessary to cover loss of productivity because as Stephen says Such multitasking is one of the great time wasters of corporate projects. 20 But heres a thought. If we are in DRED of missing that plane we just talked about, how much safer would we be if we doubled our resources and had two people running to catch that plane? AEW Services, Vancouver, BC 2004 Email emailprotected ca Total Project Control Page 6 of 7 Summary It is time that project management practitioners started a serious dialogue on the subject of managing scope as one of the variables, and perhaps the key variable, in project management. contain not what is the cost of this project, or change, and can we afford it?Ask instead, what is the value to the organization of this project, or change, is it worthy it and how does it stack up against our other options? any(prenominal) may argue that a dollar value metric is not disposed(p) to their particular type of project, but whichever way you look at it, money is the only common vehicle for comparison amidst projects in a portfolio. Stephen sums up his target at the end of chapter 1 by observing21 The purpose of a project is not to be light or inexpensive, but to make a profit. It should be managed in such a way as to maximize that profit. All the work, and all aspects of the project that impact its profit should be analyzed together, in an structured way that shows the effect of the various alternatives on the project profit. Each project that is managed in a context with other projects should be analyzed in an integrated way that shows the effects of each (ostensibly internal) project decision on all other projects, and, specifically, on the multi-project profit. Insofar as projects are managed without regard to profit, bad (profit-reducing) decisions will be made, some(prenominal) randomly and systematically, throughout the organization.Stephens book was first published fiver years ago. In our experience it takes about that long for new ideas to sink into the collective psyche of the project management populace. So, we share Stephens view. It is time that project sponsors and the creators of the enterprise planning software they use (if any) figure out how to incorporate these variable scope and value concepts, and apply them to their projects. Then, perhaps, we will be in a get around position to demonstrate that the traditional definition of project success of being On time and within budget is short term and very narrowly focused. We deal that Stephen Devauxs book makes a valuable donation to the discussion of project and portfolio management, planning and tracking. However, some things have changed in the last five years, or are better understood, so we sincerely hope that Stephen will consider updating and reissuing his book Total Project Control. If he does, we h ope he will also add a glossary. R. Max Wideman Fellow, PMI 1 2 Devaux, S. Adapting to Change

Adapting to Change

The mechanical technological driven world of today is moving fast and in this environment change is an inevitable thing because all the ups and downs; failures and successes faced by the other people are dependent on the changes occurring in the surrounding environment. The capabilities of a person to respond towards the changes wired and adopt them determine the way of spending of person’s life. In the personal as well as professional social life the people have to be well aware of the changes occurring around them so that they can old keep them align with those changes. Most of the changes occurring in the surrounding world are led by the technological advancements.Implementing change is rather difficult. The dissertation is based on a qualitative research study that is conducted through secondary analysis of data and a case study. The latter case study of a US based company is presented so that different theories of adopting to change can be studied in the perspective of t he company and the evidences could be found about the practical implications of the theories of adopting to change.1.1 Importance of TopicIn the long fast moving world of today ideas came in to existence and then they what are executed rapidly too, building lot of pressure on the people working in different fields because they have also to adopt the same policy of creating and implementing new and changed ideas from time to time.Recognizing change may be battle.

1.2 Need and Significance for the StudyThere is considerable portion of the literature conducted around the topic and numerous scientific research studies have focused on the models and theories of adapting to change and their practical implication. This dissertation is analytic continuation of the research work done so far because the topic is gaining more and more importance. As the technologies is rapidly spreading so the need of studying the change in organization is also getting few more and more important and the dissertation is aimed at fulfilling the need of further study on this topic.Change is inevitable and its constant.Literature Review2.1. Adopting to change – Historical PerspectiveAdopting to change in an organization is not a new phenomenon but it has deep roots inside the history. Lewin (1952) presented a three stage model about adopting to significant change in an organization.Everyone has obviously noticed the change in the markets.

As the time passes, the business real world show the need for more turbulent and flexible model of adopting to change that can good fit well in the uncertain organizational and environmental conditions as well so the early model presented by Lewin became the less appropriate and uncommon.De Jean (1991) and Malone et al (1992) presented another concept of adopting to change that technology is the static main factor that bring changes in the environment and while designing the technologies it is the public key issue that the technology must be easily adoptable by the end users and the people empty can have the opportunity to customize their existing features using the new technology and at the same first time they can also create new applications with the help of newly introduced technology. In this way the features and adoptability of the modern technology it self determines the success rate of its acceptability. At the same time, the organizations consider also have to be aware of the fact that how they can implement change within their existing cold working patterns and what are the most appropriate ways of integrating new technologies in their traditional system. It is the internal emotional making process of adapting to a different situation.2.2. Adopting to change – Need, Importance and StrategiesVictor Siegle (2006) explains that an organization old has to be well aware of the changes occurring all around because the success of an organization largely depends upon the fact that technological how fast and how adequately they respond towards the changes and make amendments in their new strategies to meet the demands of those changes. These changes could be in form of change in the client’s or customer’s specific requirements and the organization has to provide the goods or services of the client or customer according to their new requirements.Know how you react to pressure in your very own way that is distinctive! Over-training or spi nal injury outcomes if stress may not be tolerated.

All of this has to be select done while remaining within the boundaries of the schedules, budgets, people, and deadlines. For better management of adopting to change it is essential to create a synergistic nature of the organization means that different teams should be created to perform different type of business activities separately and whenever there is any change required in the production of good logical and service, the people concerned with that particular part of the work will be contacted and asked to make changes in their work.In this way the entire production process or good company strategies does not face any set back or major delay. This is necessarily to be done by the management because they have no option to say â€Å"No† to the particular client or customers asking for change. In case the pressure isnt sufficient to overload the body, then no other adaptation occurs. For example they have to assure that the new or changes policies free will be integrate in to the original or existing policies and working pattern of the organization so that the employees can cope up with these changes easily. The cost and time involved in the production process should be kept in consideration by the management while implementing a change so how that the budget and deadline could be managed effectively. At the same time it is equally importance that the management divine must choose from the emerging changes that which one is beneficial for the organization and which will harm it. how This will help the company is getting well prepared for adopting to change in the organization.Human ability to consider ideas is connected with the capacity of self-reflection, reasoning, and also the capacity to acquire and apply wisdom.

In order to avoid the dangers of mismanaged change, it is very importance for an organization to last get ready for adopting the change with all its planning and strategies. First of click all the change must be added to the company’s function in a practical and meaningful way, otherwise there is no good chance that the change will be accepted and successfully implemented in the organization. Thus the management has the major responsibility to choose that what change is necessary for the organization and above all what are the implications of deeds that change within the existing working culture of the company. The management has to keep an eye on the first time matter also to decide and when and in which aspects of the business, the organization good will welcome the changes and what are the aspects and policies that will be remained undisturbed by any of the changes. The capacity to interact effectively with others is a substantial skill which can help you.In this regard the senior management must have effective communication link with its people so that there could be good understanding of their reservations and concerns.2.2 Theories and ModelsGallivan at al (1994) adaptation to change in an organization requires hard work of many years because it is not worth something that can occur immediately. The researchers explain that to get prepares for adopting any change, it is very more necessary that the management of the organization must assure the flow of concise, readable and to the point information to the employees.Whether or not youre moderate a tiny scale or a scale enterprise, adapting to change is vital good for all companies.

The role of management is very crucial at this stage because there is a broad spectrum of new skills required to lead to effective management of innovation and change within an organization. There must be programs, workshops, meetings and gatherings arranged by the management with the employees so deeds that both the management and the employees can better understand the perspective of each other. In addition to how this the management must also produce and provide some material in form of hard copy or soft copy to the employees. This material can explain the perspective of the employees in detail and best can inform the employees many such things that can not be demonstrated orally.Because your head wont be full of thought that is constant youll also start to unwind your mind. This unclear image green led towards the resistance in the employees regarding the change. Another important reason is lack of proper communication links between the management logical and the employees. Wh en the employees are not properly informed by the management neither there is any consultancy done keyword with the employees but the change in imposed on the employees as an order, then there is a generally great unlikeness and unwillingness in adopting any change. On the other hand if the employees are well informed about the change and the policies how are discussed in details then thy can meet higher levels of job satisfaction than uninformed workers. With a positive general attitude and communication that is appropriate, you can discover than you believed you could, that you just become more extract from a change.
